The Annual Running of the Bull in Delaware, July 12, 2014

Update: Sunday July 13, 2014 Bull Wins Fight at Dewey’s Annual Running of the Bull

In a state known for its silly events, (the Punkin Chunkin’; the Buffalo Stampede) the Annual Running of the Bull at Dewey Beach, Delaware has to be one of the quirkiest. What started out 18 years ago as a word-of-mouth party for friends has turned into experience big enough to be included on E! Online’s “Ultimate Summer Bucket List” of 17 summer events. Surprisingly, the Annual Running of the Bulls ranked in between heavy-hitters like Comic-Con and Lollapalooza.

“Delaware doesn’t usually come to mind when trying to think of an amazing place to party this summer, but most people have never been to Dewey Beach,” the website for the E! Entertainment cable channel reported. (Maybe E! hasn’t heard of Firefly, but whatever…)

“Of course the bull is fake, and we can only assume that copious amounts of alcohol are involved, but this event brings out thousands of people every year who flock to see what this party town has to offer.”

Washington, D.C.’s Michael McDonnell and a few of his beach house friends launched the first bull run in 1997. Since then, it has grown into a fan-favorite bash that draws up to 2,000 party-goers from across the country to watch two men in a bull costume chase fun-seekers down Dewey Beach.

The event mimics the Festival of San Fermin held in Pamplona, Spain and is held between July 7th and 13th to coincide with Spain’s famous running of the bulls. Some participants dress in the traditional Pamplona white clothing and red bandanas, while other favor less traditional bikini tops, kilts, clown wigs, and whatever they feel like. Unlike the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, there have been no deaths or gorings in Dewey Beach. Local police escort runners across Delaware Route 1, which helps lower the danger level.

Participation in the event is free.
