Peep Mobile in Bethlehem,PA

Gail A Sisolak Copyright 2014.

Gail A Sisolak Copyright 2014.

I visited Bethlehem, PA during the summer of 2012, and found it to be a fun town, filled with a variety of activities for all ages. Until I went there though, I didn’t know that it is the birthplace of Peeps. Peeps make me happy! They are bright, cheerful and deliver an instant sugar rush. The make great s’mores too. While in Bethlehem, we found the Peep Mobile at a small community fair. Like the more famous Oscar Mayer Weiner Mobile, its function is largely decorative and promotional. Still, wouldn’t it be fun to be the driver? Imagine the smiles you’d get driving down the highway.

My Picks for Musikfest, August 2, 2014

Musikfest professes to have one of the most diverse genre venues around. It’s a claim many music festivals make, but IMHO, Musikfest meets the challenge. Where else can you find a music festival that features musicians playing everything from polkas to indie punk rock? The selections are so varied, it’s hard to choose who to see.

I’m always up for a new experience, so here are my two picks for tonight.

Mucca Pazza, 7:30 p.m. Volksplatz

This is a special shout out to all band geeks. Yes, I spent my time marching 8-to-5. We were bad; bad doesn’t even begin to describe it. There were no tryouts for our band, they were begging for warm bodies. For the first four or five home football games, I carried an instrument without a mouthpiece, just to help fill out the ranks. We did run-ons that were so chaotic the director told us “if you slip, bow. Make them think you meant it.” When the sousaphone player became enamored of one of the trumpet players, our director arranged Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia” with a sousaphone solo.

With that kind of background, I really need to see Mucca Pazza the rambunctious 20-piece circus-punk indie-rock marching band from Chicago that plays everything from Balkan brass to zombie mambo and demented arrangements of Dmitri Shostakovich. The group will lead a parade starting at 5 p.m. at Liederplatz and winding through the festival on the north side.

After that, I’ll go for King Paris and His Hypnotic Guitar, 9 p.m. Volksplatz. Rick Vito, who was lead guitarist for Fleetwood Mac and Bob Seger in the 1980s and ’90s (and is a Kutztown University grad), takes his new turban-wearing persona to the stage. I spent my formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area. What can I say? His videos look like a couple of parties I attended. Besides, I’m totally intrigued by someone who pairs “Ring of Fire” with belly dancers.

If neither of those float your boat, you can find something more to your taste here.

Win an Overnight Stay in the Lehigh Valley, PA

This is your chance to win an overnight getaway in one of the most elegant and celebrated accommodations in the Lehigh Valley, the Historic Hotel Bethlehem. Boasting Palladian windows with dramatic views of the downtown district, the stately Historic Hotel Bethlehem has been restored to its original 1922 grandeur. Seven large murals by artist George Gray retell the history of Bethlehem, from its founding by Moravian brethren to its position as an industrial center. Classically styled guestrooms offer views of the city’s Main Street or the noted Bethlehem Star on South Mountain. Within blocks of the landmark hotel is an astounding mix of historic structures, both residential and commercial and glass and steel towers that pierce the sky. The hotel captures the essence of the city while catering to the needs of modern day travelers.

When I’m in Bethlehem, I like to stay in the Historic Bethlehem Hotel because right across Main Street is The Moravian Book Shop, the oldest bookstore in the world. It was founded in 1745 when the Moravian Church appointed Samuel Powell of the Church’s Crown Inn on the South Side of the Lehigh River to operate a book store. After several locations, the Moravian Book Shop was moved to the church’s publications building near the Central Moravian Church in 1871. It is so much more than a book store, and its café, gourmet foods, music and gifts departments allow me to spend several hours happily browsing.

Main Street is a central hub of Bethlehem, and visitors can easily stroll to restaurants, historic sites, and more shops and boutiques.

In addition to an overnight stay with breakfast for two at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem, contest winners will receive a $50 gift card to the Edge for dinner. Located in the heart of downtown, Edge delivers a wonderful dining experience in a casual upscale atmosphere. Chef Timothy Widrick uses French and Asian influences in his classic to modern cuisine.
