The countdown has begun for one of Delaware’s most popular events, the Punkin Chunkin World Championship. Dover International Speedway will be the new host site for the World Championship Punkin Chunkin event.

The World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) hosts a signature pumpkin-launching event each year, fueling innovative engineering and science-based ideas that draw spectators from all over. They believe that Punkin Chunkin cultivates the odd, challenging, and competitive quest for distance that inspires creativity, ingenuity, teamwork, and passion. It is this very dedication that drives teams to compete using science and engineering skills and brings spectators to the gate.

This year, you and seven friends could be tailgating at the 2014 Punkin Chunkin World Championship. Contest winner will receive one (1) tailgate pass on the fire line and eight (8) tickets for the Saturday, Oct. 25 event.

Contest entry:

What started as a challenge in 1986 has turned into an epic, world-class competition drawing hurlers and mega crowds. For three days, engineers, both serious and home grown, bring their huge contraptions and give it all they’ve got to chunk their 8- to 10-pound pumpkin as far as it can go.

The gates open at 7:30 AM each day. All machines fire at least once a day, starting at 8:00 AM. The order can change from day to day depending on weather (they can’t shoot in foggy conditions), whether they finished all the machines the previous day, etc.

They have to play it by ear, but usually they start on both ends of the firing line, alternating shots with the adult trebuchets and the Youth mechanical teams – catapults, trebuchets and human power. Once the youth mechanicals are done, they continue firing the adult mechanicals, moving towards the center of the firing line. Once they are done, they then move to the youth air cannons, the adult centrifugals and the adult air cannons. Then, after all that, they usually have a free-for-all period until dusk where the machines may fire as much as they wish.

Cant’ wait? Play online to get in the mood.

ALL ZOMBIE TICKETS ARE FIRST COME FIRST SERVE TODAY!!! Don’t worry about getting your timed ticket online today, just come to the main entrance and choose your time to battle! No equipment or experience necessary and you will not be shot!

I had to back-track a bit, to find out that the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia is holding a ZOMBIE PAINT BALL event today, Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Truck leaves every 30 minutes. 100 paint balls included. Reloads available for $5.00. http://www.talawv.com.

I feel like the notice should come with one of those movie disclaimers, “no actual zombies will be hurt during the filming of this event.”

Get out there and do your best zombie shuffle.

Update: They are running the ZOMBIE PAINT BALL in the daytime, every Saturday until the last weekend of September. Volunteers still needed to be zombies. Tickets until October are $15.00 per person.

El Galeón Andalucía is a replica of the late 16th century fabled merchant vessels and war ships that made up the early navies of Europe. She is the only galeón class vessel sailing the open seas today.

The galeón class vessel was an ocean going ship type that evolved from the carrack in the second half of 16th century. Galeóns were constructed from oak, pine and various hardwoods for hull and decking. Hundreds of expert tradesmen, including carpenters, blacksmiths, shipwrights and pitch-melters worked day and night for months to make a galeón seaworthy.

Due to the long periods spent at sea and poor conditions on board, many of the crew perished during the voyage; therefore advanced rigging systems were developed so that the vessel could be sailed by a smaller crew.

On one special night, you can “Party with the Pirates” aboard the El Galeón Andalucía during a VIP event. Appetizers, soft drinks, beer and wine will be served during this rare chance for the public to experience El Galeón in the evening and enjoy the sunset onboard. Foodie Fun and Air-Raising Activities at the Great Chesapeake Balloon Festival

Like many balloon festivals, the Third Annual Great Chesapeake Balloon Festival scheduled for August 1st & 2nd, 2014 will feature an exciting array of fantastic balloons for lighter-than-air travel enthusiasts. They have a foodie kick-off contest I’ve never seen before, that should earn it a place on Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods America.

Four Chefs from Easton, MD restaurants will meet in front of the Washington Street Court House and battle it out in the “Scossa Balloon Burner Bake Off Cooking Contest.” Yawn, another cooking contest, so what? Chefs will heat their dishes using a 15 million BTU Hot Air Balloon burner. The public is invited to watch. Yeah right. How many of them are going to singe their eyebrows or flambé their hats? Last year, at least one chef came prepared; his gloves look a lot like my suede fireplace gauntlets.

“Scossa Balloon Burner Bake Off Cooking Contest” Thursday, July 31st from 5 to 6 p.m.

The Balloon Festival itself will feature at least 15 hot air balloons, skydivers, balloon rides, and a giant walk-through hot air balloon for children and adults. The event will take place Mistletoe Drive, off Glebe Road behind Aqua Pool in Easton.

It benefits Talbot County Paramedic Foundation, and is sponsored by Tri-Gas & Oil and Aqua Pool.
Balloonists will gather at Mistletoe Drive Friday, August 1st at 5 p.m. preparing for launch. Two hot air balloons, tethered to the ground will offer rides ($20 adults $10 children under 12) up to 60 feet in the air; and a large balloon will be inflated on the ground for children & adults to venture into the center of the colorful balloon ($2 per child). A special shape balloon will be premiering this year “Eddie & Rickenbacker” balloon featuring the history of Army aviation.

Skydivers from Baltimore Skydive will jump into the event at 6 p.m. just before the ascension of the balloons. Aqua Pool’s Glow will begin a half hour past sunset with balloons glowing through the colorful balloon envelopes.

Saturday morning, August 2nd, a Presentation of Colors will take place at 6 a.m. Balloons will begin inflation immediately following with a massive ascension. At 8 a.m. Chic-Filet will present a “Cow Drop” when a hundred miniature cows will parachute from the sky to the crowd. Each cow will have a coupon for a free sandwich from Chic-Filet.

Limited number of boarding passes to ride in the launch is available for $225 each. Persons wishing to make a reservation should contact Balloonmeister Ron Broderick 410-442-5566. Food and beverages will be available for sale during the events. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The event is free to the public with plenty of parking.
