Since I am a needle artist, I’m always on the look-out for exciting venues which feature both historic and modern fiber arts. As a result, I’m looking forward to the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES), three-day celebration of the fiber arts featuring exhibits, workshops, classes, guest speakers, demonstrations, vendors, and a special viewing of the movie “Stitched.”

This FiberFest event takes place August 7th. 8th & 9th, 2014 in Downtown Denton.

The event kicks off on Thursday, August 7th with a “Lunch & Learn” event featuring two speakers, who will explore different aspects of the world of quilting. Heather Kojan, Baltimore Modern Quilt Guild founder, will discuss her journey from traditional to modern quilts; and Alden O’Brien, DAR Museum curator, will talk about three quilters from the early 1800’s. The event is from 10:30-2:00pm at the Fretterd Community Center and includes a catered bag lunch. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at door.

Later on Thursday, August 7th, the Heartland Quilters of the Eastern Shore’s hosts the 6th annual One Stop Shop Hop at the Denton Firehouse from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This event will feature fiber arts vendors including quilt, antique quilt, fabric and yarn shops; wool spinners; long arm quilters; and much more. Admission to the Shop Hop is $3.00 at the door. All guests receive an entry gift and can look forward to door prizes throughout the evening, and raffle quilts from participating guilds. Food concessions will be available.

On Friday, August 8th, Heather Kojan will be presenting a modern improve quilt class from 9am -4pm at the Denton Library, $45 per person. Then, FACES will host a local Yarn Night featuring Janet Healey of Frivolous Fibers as she recounts her artistic journey with yarn. Participants are encouraged to bring their knitting and other hand-work from 6-8pm for this free event.

On Saturday, August 9th, FiberFest free activities include fiber-arts demonstrations from 9am-12pm at FACES; a viewing of the fun-filled documentary, “Stitched,” which follows three quilters racing to complete their entries for the International Quilt Festival, from 12pm-2pm at the Denton Library.

The Doll Family exhibit reception: meet the artists and view their whimsical collections of dolls, doll clothes, doll quilts, and doll houses, from 2-4pm at FACES. In addition to the Doll Family exhibit, FACES will host a regional fiber arts sale; and fiber art exhibits at The Foundry, the Museum of Rural Life, and the Central Library will also be on display.

The Caroline County Council of Arts is sponsoring this event with funding from the Maryland State Arts Council an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.

I don’t know about you, but I like to enjoy a class of wine when I get together with friends, particularly my girlfriends. We enjoy wine tasting, wine with meals, cooking with wine—just about anything we can do to enhance our appreciation and knowledge. Berkeley Springs, WV is the ideal location for a quick getaway this weekend due their special wine activities Saturday, June 7, 2014.

There’s wine tasting at Wilkes Street Wine Shop from noon to 5:00 p.m. Just down the block, Jules Enchanting Gifts & Collectibles invites you to “wine a bit with your girlfriends” with a wine and treats party from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Even the art is soaked with wine on Saturday. The Morgan Arts Council launches its new Corks & Creation art classes from 4:00-6:30 p.m. at the Ice House where you can make and take fused glass photo frames along with complimentary wine. Mountain Man Homebrew appeals to DIY folks with a make your own wine class starting at noon.
