My Picks for Musikfest, August 2, 2014

Musikfest professes to have one of the most diverse genre venues around. It’s a claim many music festivals make, but IMHO, Musikfest meets the challenge. Where else can you find a music festival that features musicians playing everything from polkas to indie punk rock? The selections are so varied, it’s hard to choose who to see.

I’m always up for a new experience, so here are my two picks for tonight.

Mucca Pazza, 7:30 p.m. Volksplatz

This is a special shout out to all band geeks. Yes, I spent my time marching 8-to-5. We were bad; bad doesn’t even begin to describe it. There were no tryouts for our band, they were begging for warm bodies. For the first four or five home football games, I carried an instrument without a mouthpiece, just to help fill out the ranks. We did run-ons that were so chaotic the director told us “if you slip, bow. Make them think you meant it.” When the sousaphone player became enamored of one of the trumpet players, our director arranged Simon & Garfunkel’s “Cecilia” with a sousaphone solo.

With that kind of background, I really need to see Mucca Pazza the rambunctious 20-piece circus-punk indie-rock marching band from Chicago that plays everything from Balkan brass to zombie mambo and demented arrangements of Dmitri Shostakovich. The group will lead a parade starting at 5 p.m. at Liederplatz and winding through the festival on the north side.

After that, I’ll go for King Paris and His Hypnotic Guitar, 9 p.m. Volksplatz. Rick Vito, who was lead guitarist for Fleetwood Mac and Bob Seger in the 1980s and ’90s (and is a Kutztown University grad), takes his new turban-wearing persona to the stage. I spent my formative years in the San Francisco Bay Area. What can I say? His videos look like a couple of parties I attended. Besides, I’m totally intrigued by someone who pairs “Ring of Fire” with belly dancers.

If neither of those float your boat, you can find something more to your taste here.

Hunterdon County will celebrate its 300th birthday on Thursday, August 7, 2014 with a concert and fireworks, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

This celebration was originally scheduled for July the 3rd, but the fireworks had to be cancelled because of stormy weather.

The concert will feature the 18-piece Vince Pettinelli Orchestra popular with area residents and known for playing a wide selection of musical styles and eras.

The celebration will take place in the Deer Path Park, located at 120 West Woodschurch Road in Flemington. To make getting to and from the park easier, LINK shuttle buses have been organized to run between the park and various locations in Flemington.

Everyone is invited to bring blankets, chairs, picnic dinners, friends and family to the celebration.

There will also be a concession stand run by local food vendor, Pudgy’s Street Food. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed at this event.

For updates check http://www.hunterdon300th.org/ or call (908)782-1158 after 3:00 p.m.

The concert will come to a grand climax with a spectacular fireworks display sponsored by the Hunterdon Tricentennial Committee and the Flemington Raritan Parks and Recreation Committee.

To the wider world, the Doctors might be the multi-million-selling icons behind hits like “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” not to mention the classic “Pocket Full Of Kryptonite.” But in 2014, Chris Barron (vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass) are reconnecting with the flat-broke twenty-somethings who scraped for dollars at the sharp end of the Big Apple blues circuit. The Spin Doctors have come full-circle.

Fresh off of his co-hosting duties from this past Sunday’s American Country Music Awards, Grammy nominee and Country Music Awards (CMA) reigning “Male Vocalist of the year” for the 4th consecutive year, Shelton is a weekly TV fixture as a coach on NBC’s “The Voice”. Shelton just made history with the most consecutive No. 1’s on the country airplay charts with his current single, “Doin’ What She Likes,” marking his 16th No. 1 overall (11th consecutive). He also holds the “Album of the Year” award from the 2013 CMA’s for his current platinum-selling release Based On a True Story. Fans can also see Shelton this summer on his “Ten Times Crazier” tour.
Opening for Blake Shelton is Dan & Shay, the Nashville country-music duo touring with Shelton on the current leg of his 2014 Ten Times Crazier Tour, which kicked off in June.
