A Steamy Weekend with Eastern Shore Threshermen in Federalsburg, MD

The history of agriculture runs deep through the heart of Maryland, and without it the region would be bereft of the tales of dedication and hard work it took for farming families to get food to our tables.

The Eastern Shore Threshermen & Collectors Assoc., Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and demonstrating antique farm machinery including: Steam Engines, Antique Tractors, Gas Engines, Stationary Engines, Threshers, Implements, Steam Models, Antique Cars, Miniature Steam Train, Antique Machinery, Shingle Mill, and Rock Crusher.

The history of the organization goes back several generations to tell the tales of families who worked from sun-up to sun-down using the machines and equipment collected and demonstrated at the 54th Annual Wheat Threshing, Steam & Gas Engine Show held on August 1,2 &3, 2014.

The 54th Annual Wheat Threshing, Steam & Gas Engine Show makes a great family outing for those with children who love the big tractors they while traveling. Bright, big and green they tower over the smaller lawn tractors they see in suburbia. Kids of all ages will enjoy seeing how the massive machines work, the kind of work they are able to do, and how steam power made work easier. The show may spark the imagination of a future engineer.

The YouTube clip gives you an idea of what you’ll see. I like the big belt driven equipment, since I used to work in a belt driven machine shop. I like to play with the big toys too!

Admission and parking is free. Food is available for sale; breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m.

August 1, 2, 3, 2014

Meet Your Favorite Storybook Characters in the Laurel Highlands, PA

Large scale theme parks, like Disneyland, Disneyworld and Universal Studios in SoCal and Florida, tempt family travelers with their state-of-the-art attractions featuring comic book, story book, and movie tie-ins. While these parks can be exciting for older children and adults, I know from experience they are not always appealing to younger children. Long lines test the tempers of young children and adults; bright lights and loud music can be frightening. In fact, some parents have reported their little ones liked the hotel pool just as much as the expensive park.

Fortunately, regional parks like Storybook Forest at Idlewild Park in the Laurel Highlands near Ligonier, Pennsylvania fit the bill for families with little ones. It features thirty-three scenes and landmarks from an array of children’s fairytales and fables, including The Little Engine That Could, Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Aladdin…
